Equipment manufacturing Oil and gas industry

With the advanced introduction of a PDM system, the question of the required software licenses arises. The design department is often the first department to actively use PDM. Over time, other departments and users are added. Once the CAD/PDM environment has been integrated with the ERP system, the question arises as to which ERP users should have which access to the PDM system and which licenses these users really need.

Client:
Manufacturer of equipment for the oil and gas industry
> 500 employees

Industry:
Equipment manufacturing

Topic:
Overall IT concept, change management, PDM license model

Situation:
The ongoing changes from sales, design or the internal order center resulted in high personnel costs, disruptions in downstream processes and excessively long throughput times. For this reason, consistency along the process chain of sales/project planning, development & design, order processing/project management, production and service is extremely important.

Task:

  • Recording the current situation in the context of interviews
  • Review of the documents provided in accordance with the DLP standard procedure
  • Analysis of the working methods with the main applications (SolidWorks, PRO.FILE and MS Dynamics NAV)
  • Derivation of potentials/weaknesses and the need for action.
  • Subsequently, a recommendation was drawn up on the following points:
    • What should the future interaction between mechanical design, electronics development and the ERP system look like in relation to the complete process chain (keyword CAD-PDM-ERP overall concept)?
    • Which system should play which role, i.e. which functionalities and entities should be mapped in which system?
    • How should the systems be linked along the process chain?
    • What is the medium/long-term license concept specifically for the PDM application (viewing, limited-use, full-use or linked-use licenses, etc.)?

Result:

  • The concept provides information
    • about the future CAD-PDM-ERP overall concept
    • how the identified potential can be exploited by rolling out the PDM system in stages
    • and which standard PDM functions can be used better and more intensively as a result,
    • in which phases and sub-activities the gradual implementation should take place
    • and which PDM licenses are recommended based on the different access profiles.
