Aircraft construction

The aircraft industry in particular relies on innovative and ever lighter materials. The sophisticated joining of aluminium parts using riveting technology is being further optimized and automated in parallel. Depending on the customer's task and the component geometry, the requirements for flexibility, kinematic properties or control concepts of the machines are increasing. In the face of international competition, cost pressure and requirements are increasing in terms of process expertise, system solutions and even the delivery of turnkey production halls.

Client:
Machine and plant manufacturer in the field of fastening technology
> 250 employees

Industry:
Riveting plant construction

Topic:
Process optimization R&D, manufacturing cost reduction, overall IT concept, product modularization, parts list organization, product configuration, variant management

Situation:
The costs for order and customization design were too high and lead times no longer met customer requirements. External engineering offices had to compensate for capacity bottlenecks. The challenge was the fundamental modularization and flexible standardization of the machines and systems. This meant a fundamental change in working methods both in sales and in project planning and especially in
design, including the parts list system.

Task:

  • Carrying out an inventory and concept phase
  • Identifying and evaluating weak points and potential benefits
  • Deriving the specific need for action, the task packages, a suitable project organization and a coordinated project roadmap
  • Integration of mechanical, electrical, electronic, control and software components
  • Development of configurable product structures with functional and mechatronic function and system modules
  • Consistent implementation support for the constructive modularization and standardization process
  • Mapping of the new structures including product logic and the new processes on the existing systems
  • Creation of the necessary data consistency between CAD, PDM and ERP.

Result:

  • Change in people's minds - more configuration instead of repeated redesigning.
  • The machine and component masters are created and maintained separately from the order-specific customization design, both organizationally and on the system side.
  • Sales argues in technically preconceived and sharply calculated function modules coordinated with Sales.
  • The products are subject to change and release management by an interdisciplinary team.
  • Manufacturing costs and throughput times have fallen as hoped, while at the same time the company has free capacity for innovative new and further developments despite the good order situation.
