Wind energy plant construction II

Start-ups and young companies often have very good ideas, are highly innovative and very flexible when it comes to implementing individual customer requirements. However, these companies can only be successful if they manage to consistently move towards modular products, modularization and flexible standardization. This begins in sales, continues with the quotation system, costing, the order or project bill of materials, the CAD methodology through to the incorporation of the commissioning engineers' experience from the construction site.

Client:
Start-up company in the wind energy sector

Industry:
Wind turbine construction

Topic:
PDM system introduction, quotation configuration, document management, manufacturing cost reduction, overall IT concept, product modularization, parts list configuration, product configuration

Situation:
A young start-up company is planning the future assembly and commissioning of wind turbines under license in selected countries. The only product documentation available is Excel parts lists, 2D drawings and other product-describing documents from the licensor. The management board knows from experience the consequences if the product, process and IT architecture are not properly set up and consistently designed and mapped from the outset. The 1:1 adoption of the licensor's current way of working would probably have led to uncontrolled growth in the variety of parts and thus to unnecessary process complexity and excessive manufacturing costs.

Task:

  • Assembly-oriented structuring and modularization of the wind turbines
  • Flexibility with regard to scheduling, purchasing and assembly of long runners/heavy parts on the construction site
  • Mapping both the license business and own product improvements/developments
  • Recommendation of a tried-and-tested CAD, PDM and ERP solution suitable for SMEs
  • Prototypical mapping of the configuration logic in the new ERP system (quotation/order and parts list configuration)
  • 3D CAD and PDM introduction incl. ERP connection.

Result:

  • configurable product structure suitable for assembly (LEGO construction kit)
  • Minimal product and process complexity right from the start
  • Short-term introduction and go-live of CAD, PDM and ERP standards
  • Process and data consistency from the CAD to the PDM to the ERP system
  • Ensuring high parts list quality, thus avoiding missing parts or incorrect deliveries on the construction site.
