Product configuration steel enclosure systems

The manufacturer of highly versatile steel cabinet systems and lockers wants to increase the utilization of its expensive bending, nibbling and welding machines and thus the company's overall output. This is associated with greater overall process transparency from inquiry to delivery. The aim is to improve delivery reliability, shorten delivery times overall and meet promised delivery dates. The prerequisite for this is a standardization of the product range in the direction of the market/customer together with the sales department, the introduction of clear guidelines with the help of quotation configuration and the automation of processes in the design department. This includes CAD configuration, automated drawing generation and automated generation and transfer of CAM data to production.

Client:
well-known manufacturer of steel cabinet systems
> 100 employees

Industry:
Cabinet construction

Topic:
Modularization, standardization, quotation configuration, CAD configuration, product configuration, parts list and work plan configuration

Situation:
The quotation tool within the ERP system allows prose texts within the sales article description. The product standard is not clearly defined and the effort required in the design department to process the individual orders is too high. Processed orders in the CAD system serve as a template; they are copied and modified. Design costs, internal coordination with sales and production and overall throughput times are too high; expensive machines are not properly utilized despite high order backlogs; delivery times are no longer competitive in some cases.

Task:

  • Modularization and standardization of the cabinet systems
  • Creation and mapping of neutral cabinet master models in the 3D CAD system SolidWorks
  • Recording and mapping the product logic and object dependencies in the CAD configurator
  • Automated generation of the 3D CAD models, the production drawings and the machine data (STEP, dwg etc.)

Result:

  • Definition of a modular system or product standards coordinated between sales, production, purchasing and design as well as approved options, clear separation of customer requirements
  • Requests outside the modular system are visible and are treated separately in terms of price and deadlines
  • Relief of the design department through automation with the help of the 3D CAD system
  • Increased adherence to agreed delivery dates
  • Better utilization of machine capacity thanks to shorter processing times in the design department and faster provision of machine data
