PDM in fire protection plant construction

The proportion of electronics, software and control systems in fire protection technology is constantly increasing. Shorter product development cycles and internationalization are increasing the need for internal coordination between the individual development teams. However, the requirements for data exchange with external electronics development partners are also increasing.

Situation:
The unfortunate selection of a PIM/CMS system - which was actually also intended for PDM purposes at the time - was the reason for setting up a new PDM system with external help. Established filing structures in 2D CAD were reaching their limits, as was the increasing integration of mechanics, electronics, hardware/boards and software, i.e. the merging of mechanical design with the electronics/software departments. The integration of the change management system into the production and ERP world was also complex and no longer up to date.

Task:

  • Recording/formulating the requirements of the relevant departments
  • Structuring and initial filling of the PDM specifications
  • Technical/content-related support in the creation of specifications, selection and introduction of the PDM system
  • Prototyping and pilot operation together with the PDM manufacturer in one area of development/engineering with CAD and ERP connection, then rollout to other areas of the company
  • Active support in the selection of the E-CAD system

Result:

  • Structured recording and presentation of PDM requirements from the individual specialist departments
  • Reliable PDM specifications as a basis for software selection
  • PDM search with four PDM providers, selection, contract negotiations, project/milestone planning with the selected PDM partner: design, prototyping, piloting
  • Successful introduction and go-live of the CAD-PDM-ERP process chain
  • Basis for expansion to other areas incl. DMS, integration of production, CAE etc.
