Master data management for automotive suppliers

When it comes to master data management, many companies still need to take action, both in terms of the quality of the material master and the management of document masters. The prerequisite for consistent common parts management is finding existing solutions on the engineering side. However, this is not enough if the remaining views and logistical data of the material master are not properly created and maintained.

Client:
Röchling Automotive
Manufacturer of plastic parts
> 5,000 employees

Industry:
Automotive supplier

Topic:
Material master, document master, master data maintenance, SAP, ECTR, classification, change management

Situation:
The company uses the three major 3D CAD systems in the automotive industry worldwide and SAP as its ERP system. More than 10 years ago, one of SAP's ECTR direct link solutions was implemented in the group as a multi-CAD solution; primarily together with engineering and without significant involvement of logistics and production. As both engineering and the interface supplier thought primarily in terms of documents, the documents, i.e. 3D models and drawings, were initially classified. As part of the prototype phase of product development, rudimentary material masters were then created so that the purchaser, for example, could procure them. However, the standardized creation and maintenance of SAP material masters across all plants was neglected and the classification of documents increasingly proved to be a performance problem as the quantity structure grew. Important standard functionalities in MM or PP could not be used because the material master attributes were not maintained cleanly and consistently and were used elsewhere.

Task:

  • Provision of efficient search and retrieval options
  • Merging the world of materials and documents
  • This increases the reuse of identical parts (platform concept)
  • thereby opening up cost reduction potentials

DLP services:

  • Recording product portfolio, development processes, IT systems
  • Analysis of material master data creation process incl. data quality
  • Conception of the merging of material and document world
  • Design of a standardized graphical classification and retrieval system in SAP, initially for purchased parts
  • Project support as part of the implementation on the SAP system

Result:

  • Standardized material master creation and maintenance process across all plants
  • Standardized graphical classification and search system in SAP (especially for engineering and purchasing)
  • Use of additional SAP standard functions by improving the quality of SAP material master data
  • Optimization of the naming issue - keyword multilingualism - through the introduction of a uniform naming catalogue
  • Improvement of parts list quality through early and always correct creation of material masters
