Situation:
The company uses the three major 3D CAD systems in the automotive industry worldwide and SAP as its ERP system. More than 10 years ago, one of SAP's ECTR direct link solutions was implemented in the group as a multi-CAD solution; primarily together with engineering and without significant involvement of logistics and production. As both engineering and the interface supplier thought primarily in terms of documents, the documents, i.e. 3D models and drawings, were initially classified. As part of the prototype phase of product development, rudimentary material masters were then created so that the purchaser, for example, could procure them. However, the standardized creation and maintenance of SAP material masters across all plants was neglected and the classification of documents increasingly proved to be a performance problem as the quantity structure grew. Important standard functionalities in MM or PP could not be used because the material master attributes were not maintained cleanly and consistently and were used elsewhere.
