CAD configuration of heat exchangers with Tacton

A well-known manufacturer of heat exchangers is migrating a highly automated 2D CAD drawing creation solution to a modern 3D CAD configuration environment. This means setting up a parametric 3D CAD configuration including parts list configuration, duplicate check in PDM, subsequent 2D drawing automation and ERP integration. In other words, automation despite a high proportion of Engineer To Order (ETO).

Situation:

A parts list and 2D drawing creation system that had grown over decades and was continuously optimized and customized was to be replaced by modern 3D CAD software including configuration options. The existing ERP environment was set, whereby the PDM environment was to take over the leading role of the articles, parts lists and classification.

Task:

  • Inventory of product structures, processes and the IT system landscape
  • Derivation of specific requirements and formulation of a specification sheet
  • Selection and integration of suitable software partners (in particular CAD, configurator, PDM)
  • Standardization and development of an initial pilot using the example of a plate heat exchanger
  • Coupling the CAD configuration environment with the new PDM system (duplicate check) and the ERP system (article / parts list creation etc.)

Result:

  • Stable CAD/configuration/PDM environment as the basis for successive migration of further product series
  • Leading PDM system in terms of parts and document management, release and change management and classification
  • Possibility of configuring customer-specific heat exchangers at runtime, including 3D CAD model generation, duplicate check / part master creation, parts list generation and automated drawing creation
