IT strategy in compressor construction

Compressor construction is very varied and ranges from standard devices with series character to one-off production, e.g. in the field of process gas applications. Development and design as well as manufacturing and production place different demands on the topics of variant management, parts list organization or CAD-PDM-ERP integration.

Client:
Leading mechanical engineering company in compressor and compressor construction
> 1,000 employees

Industry:
Compressor construction

Topic:
Quotation configuration, overall IT concept, product data migration, SAP PLM, change management, PDM selection, benchmark, variant management

Situation:
The trigger was the replacement of the existing ERP system landscape with future-proof standard software. The IT management and the executive board had recognized that this changeover was a unique opportunity to critically scrutinize established product structures, data, numbering systems and processes from an external perspective at an early stage before an ERP system changeover and, if necessary, to optimize them in a controlled manner before, during or after the changeover.

Task:

  • Answering the following management questions:
    • What do we need to change or clean up from a technical perspective before the ERP changeover, what should we change or clean up during the implementation and what can we change or clean up after going live (keyword material master data, classification, configuration logic, parts lists, routings, numbering systems, etc.)?
    • How do we connect the existing 3D CAD system to the future ERP world, i.e. via an existing CAD-related PDM system, via a neutral PDM system or in the form of an ERP-related PDM solution?
    • What needs to be considered when connecting the quotation configurator to the new ERP system?

Result:

  • Inventory within a few days with a closed technical IT concept as a result of a tidy IT development plan that shows the future distribution of roles and integration of the individual systems with each other
  • Functional map, i.e. which functionalities or entities should be mapped in which system in the future
  • the specific fields of action, i.e. what needs to be prepared in detail in the areas of master data quality, parts list management, classification, configuration/logic, change management, etc.
  • Rough requirements/burdens from a technical perspective for the future joint PDM solution
  • Basis for decision: CAD-ERP direct coupling or indirect PDM solution.
