APPARATUS ENGINEERING FOR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

APPARATUS ENGINEERING FOR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

As the roll-out of a PDM system progresses, so the question of the necessary software licences arises. Design is often the first department that uses PDM actively. Over time, more departments and users begin to use the system. At the latest when the CAD/PDM environment is being integrated with the ERP system, the question is posed as to which ERP users should have what type of access to the PDM system and which licences these users really need.

Client: Manufacturer of apparatus for oil and gas industry  > 500 employees

Branch: Apparatus engineering

Topic: Overall IT concept, change management, PDM licence model

Situation: The ongoing changes originating from sales, design or the internal orders centre were reflected in high staffing demands, disruptions in downstream processes and long throughput times. Therefore, consistency along the process chain involving sales/project planning, development, design, order processing/project management, production and service was very important.

Brief:

  • The task was as follows:
    • Ascertaining the current situation through interviews
    • Inspecting the documents provided according to DLP’s standard procedure
    • Analysing the working method with the main applications (SolidWorks, PRO.FILE and MS Dynamics NAV)
    • Using that information to derive the weaknesses/potential and the requirements for action
  • Afterwards, drawing up recommendations covering the following points:
    • How should the interaction of mechanical engineering design, electronics development and the ERP system function in the future with respect to the complete process chain (i.e. overall CAD-PDM-ERP concept)?
    • Which system should play which role here, i.e. which functionalities and entities should be mapped in which system?
    • How are the systems to be connected along the process chain?
    • What medium-/long-term licence concept is specifically required for the PDM application (viewing, limited-use, full-use or linked-use licences, etc.)?

Result:

  • The concept provides information on:
    • The future overall CAD-PDM-ERP concept
    • How the potential demonstrated can be tapped through a phased roll-out of the PDM system
    • and which PDM standard functions can thus be used better and more intensively
    • During which stages and activities the phased implementation should take place
    • and which PDM licences can be recommended on the basis of different access profiles
